Overview of current work in WP5.4

WP5.4 : a quick overview of who is doing what now, and how it fits together in the broader picture.

The central part in WP5.4 are the "geographic tools", providing taxonomists with an online platform for their daily work : processingdata, visualising data, preparing their publications. The interface should be very user-friendly, so people can use it regardless of their computer skills.

The most visible tool here is CSIC (Pere) work : the Geoplatform Mapviewer for data visualisation.

M5.21a Operational specimen web portal

Since 2001, the GBIF (Global biodiversity Information Facility) has been networking worldwide biodiversity data and making them freely available on the Internet. Currently, more than 150 million records (from simple occurrence data to highly structured specimen observation) are indexed by GBIF and accessible through several web portals. Almost all records available via these systems include the Latin name of the organism; which is used as a primary search term.

C5.90 Inclusion of missing data items in GBIF index

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) was established to make biodiversity data openly and universally available. One of the products of GBIF is a central index database that stores a limited number of core data elements. Because original biodiversity data remain with the data providers, the data not stored in the index database can be viewed but not be searched.

C5.89 List of data items and searchable data items in existing portals

Compile the specimen access functionality of existing specimen access portals for zoological, mycological and botanical specimens. Attempt to develop a priority list of access points.

C5.87 WP6 exemplar group data migrated to CDM v1

For enabling the EDIT WP6 exemplar groups to use their data within the upcoming EDIT Cybertaxonomy tools based on the Common Data Model (CDM) and the CDM Store the exemplar groups’ data have been transformed from their original format into CDM directly or into a format that is an import format for the CDM.

C5.82 Specification of CSSO profiles for the platform covering the use cases web application, web service and desktop applicatio

The general objective of the activity is the design of a security infrastructure for the platform and introduction of a secure Single Sign-On service (SSO) for the platform. The task to be achieved within the third JPA concerns the integration of a Community Single Sign-On (CSSO) security infrastructure within the platform.

C5.86 Data portal prototype

Based on the “Data Portal” mock-ups, the Botanic Garden & Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew have developed a web application prototype which publishes taxonomic data as stored in a cdm (Common data Model) data store. The Data Portal requests data by connecting to the cdm web services which are an integral component of the cdm library and application suite within the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy.

C5.55 Platform environment circumscribed based on existing standards

As documentation system for the platform the same TRAC Wiki is used that also serves as a project management tool for the platform development. TRAC is one of leading project management tool for software development. The site can be visited at http://dev.e-taxonomy.eu/trac/wiki/PlatformArchitecture and all its sub sites.

C5.23 EDIT Intellectual Property Licence Options Appraisal

Although Creative Commons Licences do not specifically cover data or databases (and in this they do not address the Database Right), based upon the comparison table above, it is suggested that out of the three licences (see details in the component), Creative Commons Licences are the most suitable of the three. This is primarily because unlike the other two options, Creative Commons licences:
