Milestone

M5.40 Prototype Shibboleth federation built up with further EDIT institutions

The general objective of the activity covers the design of a security infrastructure and the introduction of a secure Single Sign-On service (SSO) for the Platform. The task to be achieved within the fifth JPA concerns the integration of a Community Single Sign-On (CSSO) security infrastructure within the Platform. The CSSO enables the various EDIT service providers to protect their services and resources defining individual access control policies, while users can access different services using only one identity.

M5.35 CDM refinement concluded and documented for Platform release 3

In January 2008 and in March 2009 the first two versions of the Common Data Model (CDM) were frozen and documented. The first version was primarily based on experiences using existing data models and formats and attempted to cover all data elements relevant for the taxonomic workflow, so that data coming from different applications could be stored and processed with a single database. Version 2 included additions and refinements that came up as requirements from CDM Users and developers of the JAVA-based programming library on top of the CDM.

M5.37 Report on data completeness assessment (gap analysis) for selected test data (ATBI)

This report describes possibilities to visualize and analyze ATBI+M data in the EDIT geoplatform tools paying special attention to inventory completeness assessment. It has been compiled by Marcin Gąsior (MIIZPAN) with a generous input from Pere Roca Ristol (CSIC), Alexander Kroupa (MFN), Patricia Mergen (RMCA) and the colleagues from the EDIT developer mailing list.

M5.34 4th ISTC Meeting held

The 4th ISTC meeting was held on September 15-16, 2009 at the Department of Biodiversity Informatics and Laboratories at Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum in Berlin. The agenda covered the following aspects:
Version 2 of the Internet Platform for Cybertaxonomy
Use of standardised evaluation procedures for platform components
Integration and sustainability
Preparing for the 5th Joint Programme of Activities

M5.38 Successful integration of a first existing software tool for descriptive data (keys and taxon descriptions) with the CDM

This milestone corresponds to the delivery of demonstrator software, for further details see C5.118. It shows the successful import of SDD (Structured Descriptive Data) standard conformant data (which has been produced with an external tool) into an EDIT Common Data Model database, and the subsequent publication of the data in the CDM by means of a simple web page.

M5.33 CDM Toolkit Bundle (data store, editor, conversion tools) available and documented to be used by EDIT partner institutions

The basic software equipment needed to carry out taxonomic work with the EDIT platform is a Common Data Model data store together with the desktop taxonomic editor and basic import and export functionalities, which can be used to set up the system with existing standardized data and export data, which have been finalized. We have bundled these functionalities within the CDM desktop taxonomic editor, which is available from http://dev.e-taxonomy.eu/trac/wiki/TaxonomicEditorDownload.

M5.26 Soft Launch of ViTaL

This report documents the soft launch in July 2009 of the Virtual Taxonomic Library (ViTaL), hosted at the Natural History Museum (London). The Virtual Taxonomic Library ViTaL is a component of the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy, relaying on Common Data Model and aims to provide bibliographic services to aid the discovery and accessibility of taxonomically relevant literature.

M5.19b functional description for descriptive user interface

This report completes the component C5.081 (Use case model and functional description of CDM descriptive data editor) and provides an illustration of the essential functionalities expected from the future CDM descriptive interface. Functionalities that could be made available and how existing tools can be integrated in order to provide such functionalities, are presented through one of the EDIT exemplar group: the Arecaceae family. As in component C5.081, functionalities are divided into two major categories: edition of descriptive content and analysis/treatment of descriptive data.

M5.32 Three significant taxonomic initiatives setup as CDM projects

The implementation of a new electronic infrastructure for taxonomic data processing from the field to the printed publication should involve Users (Taxonomists) from the earliest possible stage of development. The EDIT Work Package 5 involved its User groups from the beginning by organising joint Developer/User-workshops, creating test-versions of important software components (e.g. data-portal, taxonomic editor), and publishing modelling decisions taken in the developers group on the relevant EDIT mailing lists.

M5.22 Revised CDM frozen and documented for Platform release 2

In January 2008, the first Version of the Common Data Model (CDM) was frozen and documented at http://wp5.e-taxonomy.eu/cdm/v1/. This first version is based primarily on experiences using existing data models and formats. It attempts to cover all fields related to taxonomy, so that data coming from different applications can be stored and accessed via a single
database.
