This report presents the changes that have been made on the global references Index to Biodiversity “GRIB” (http://grib.gbv.de/) based on the suggestions defined in Component C5.149 Index of references User Review and Technical Review. Some of the suggested changes have been implemented (indicated with “Done” or “Partially Done”) and some will be finished within the next weeks under the Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe (BHL-Europe) project (marked “Pending”).
The EDIT ViTaL Activity aimed at building an index of deduplicated references of library catalogues from natural history institution libraries. This index – called Global References Index to Biodiversity short GRIB (http://grib.gbv.de/) is designed to serve scientists in their search for relevant biodiversity related literature and librarians in their task to digitise legacy literature to make it available free and open online. In the beginning of 2010, a cooperation between EDIT Activity 5.3 and BHL-Europe WP2 has been established.
The EDIT/ViTaL index of references (Global References Index to Biodiversity, called GRIB1) is updated on a regular basis the timing as well as the method depend on the partners providing the data. The method of updating depends on the technological infrastructure of the partner (if the partner system supports the Z39.503 protocol or an OAI-PMH4 interface for example).
Apart from its role as a software environment supporting the day-to-day work of taxonomists and taxonomic communities, the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy provides advanced technologies for hosting checklist information systems at an international scale.
Several workshops and demonstration sessions were organised by WP5 of the EDIT project to introduce the tools of the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy to the user community and to show the IT specialists of partner institutions how to support their researchers when they are using the Platform.
