C5.54 MoU(s) ready to be proposed to directors

For improving collaboration and integration of IST departments within EDIT, two institutional MoUs (approved by the BoD in January 2008) have been now developed and are available up to now. They are based on the same template, i.e. identical except for the understandings or agreements stated in Paragraph 4.

1) Content management system for websites with taxonomic data

2) Data transfer standard for collection unit data.

M5.21b 3rd ISTC Meeting held

The 3rd ISTC meeting was held on October 1-2, 2008 at the Department of Biodiversity Informatics and Laboratories at Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum in Berlin. Third ISTC Meeting October 1-2, 2008 in Berlin

The third ISTC meeting will be held between 12:00 – 17:00 on October 1st & between 09:00 – 13:00 on October 2nd, 2008 in the Conference Room (A105) on the 2nd Floor of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Freie Universität Berlin, Königin-Luise-Str. 6-8, D-14191 Berlin, Germany.

C5.06 At least one MoU announced between EDIT partners

EDIT plans to initiate a series of MoUs, each identical except for the understandings or agreements stated in Paragraph 4. Two different templates are available up to now:

1) Content management system for websites with taxonomic data (Drupal)

2) Data transfer standard for collection unit data (ABCD)

C5.07 A comprehensive EDIT standards list available online

Based on previous reports (D5.45, D5.46) a comprehensive list of standards supported by EDIT and in particular
the Platform for Cybertaxonomy, has been published on the web and will be
continuously updated, if necessary:

C5.04 Documentation of internal rules for hardware and software and IST resources of remaining EDIT partner

The documentation of the internal decision making
structures of the participating Information Science and Technology (IST)
departments, the documentation of internal provisions, rules and traditions for
the acquisition and use of equipment and software; and the documentation of
relevant hardware and software resources is thus essential:

M5.20a BD Tracker launched

The Biodiversity Service & Application Tracker is a collection of links to software, tools and resources useful to taxonomists. All applications and services are categorised into an expandable and potentially hierarchical system covering major biodiversity topics. The site was developed and initially populated with the help of the EDIT WP5. EDIT also certifies software to be compatible with EDIT's Platform for Cybertaxonomy, a variety of tools known to work together to assist taxonomic work.

National Botanic Garden of Belgium: The Virtual Herbarium

Few years ago, we have developped a querying on exported data from BG-BASE and direct link to images.
Many specimens have been encoded in BGBase and more than 20.000 of them have been digitized.

Since several months, another colleague is developping a brand new project: "The Virtual Herbarium"

The technology used to implement the project: PHP, PostgreSQL, MySQL.
The search criteria are: Genus, Species, Country, Type specimen, Collector, Barcode number etc...
